.glb is the binary container form of the .gltf format (GL Transmission Format), developed and maintained by the Khronos Group. Where a .gltf file is plain JSON that references external .bin geometry files and separate image assets, a .glb file bundles everything - the scene graph JSON, binary geometry and animation buffers, and embedded textures - into a single self-contained file.
The file begins with a 12-byte little-endian header: the ASCII magic string glTF (hex 67 6C 54 46), a uint32 version field (value 2 for glTF 2.0), and a uint32 total file length. Following the header are length-prefixed chunks: a JSON chunk carrying the scene description (nodes, materials, cameras, animations) and a BIN\ chunk holding the raw binary buffer data.
.glb is sometimes called "the JPEG of 3D" because of its compact size, broad support and suitability for web delivery. It is the default asset format for AR on Android via Scene Viewer and the <model-viewer> web component, and is widely used in WebGL engines such as three.js and Babylon.js. Compared to .fbx or .obj, it is purpose-built for real-time rendering with physically based materials baked in.
Optional Khronos extensions add Draco mesh compression (KHR_draco_mesh_compression) and KTX2/Basis Universal texture compression (KHR_texture_basisu), significantly reducing file sizes for large scenes.

РИСК: LOWA GLB is 3D data, not an executable, so opening one to view it is safe. Realistic cautions are non-malicious: very high-poly scans or 4K textures can be heavy to load, and historically there have been parser vulnerabilities in some glTF/GLB loaders - keep your 3D software and browser-based viewers up to date and import models from reputable sources. As always, verify the real extension: a file disguised as "model.glb" that is actually an executable is the real risk, not the GLB format itself.
