Wat is het EXPRESS-bestandsformaat?
Een .express-bestand is een presentatie gemaakt met BlackBerry Express, een app voor het maken van dia's voor BlackBerry 10-telefoons. BlackBerry Sweden heeft de app gebouwd en in november 2013 als gratis bèta uitgebracht op BlackBerry World, met een update naar versie 1.0.1.16 in december van dat jaar. Het idee was om iemand binnen enkele minuten een presentatie op een telefoon te laten samenstellen, waarbij de inhoud werd gesorteerd in hoofdstukken, secties, opsommingstekens en tekst, om deze vervolgens op het apparaat of op een extern scherm via HDMI te presenteren.
Ondanks de extensie is een .express-bestand geen eigen binair formaat. Het is een .tar-archief onder een andere naam. Binnenin bevindt zich een JSON-manifest dat de diastructuur en tekst vastlegt, samen met kopieën van elke afbeelding die de auteur heeft geïmporteerd. Er is geen compressie of versleuteling, waardoor de inhoud er schoon uitkomt zodra u het bestand als een archief behandelt.

RISICO: LOWAn .express file is a passive TAR archive of images and JSON text, so it does not execute code. The main risk is practical rather than security-related: the app that created it is discontinued, so opening one now means extracting its parts manually. As with any archive from an unknown source, scan it before unpacking, since a TAR container could in principle hold unexpected files.
