What is Sequence Alignment and Modeling system?

The Sequence Alignment and Modeling (SAM) system is a bioinformatics software package developed at UC Santa Cruz by Richard Hughey, Kevin Karplus, and Anders Krogh for building and using hidden Markov models for biological sequence analysis. It was used to align protein and nucleotide sequences, search sequence databases, and model protein families.
