What is Markdown?
Markdown is a lightweight markup language and text-to-HTML conversion tool created by John Gruber in 2004. The original implementation is a Perl script hosted at daringfireball.net that converts plain-text formatting conventions into valid HTML. It was designed to be readable in raw form and has been widely adopted across documentation platforms and developer tools.
