What is Java Runtime Environment?
The Java Runtime Environment (JRE) is a software package developed by Oracle (formerly Sun Microsystems) that provides the Java Virtual Machine, core libraries, and other components necessary to run Java applications. Programs compiled to Java bytecode in .class files or packaged as .jar archives require the JRE to execute. It is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux and has historically been one of the most widely distributed software runtimes.
