What is Emacs?
Emacs is a highly extensible text editor originally developed by Richard Stallman, with GNU Emacs maintained by the Free Software Foundation. It uses Emacs Lisp as its extension language, allowing users to customize nearly every aspect of the editor and add support for programming languages, email, version control, and many other functions.
