How to convert STEP to STL
- Add your .STEP file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .STL in a few seconds.
- Download your new .STL file.
What to expect
- Exact curved surfaces become flat triangles - a coarser tessellation setting produces a blocky result; a finer one produces a smoother mesh but a larger file.
- The conversion is one-way: you cannot recover STEP precision from an STL, so keep the original
.stepas your master file. - STL carries no color or material data; if color matters, export to
.objor.3mfinstead.
Frequently asked questions
Will my curved surfaces look smooth after conversion?
That depends on tessellation quality set during export. In FreeCAD, reduce the chord deviation to 0.05-0.1 mm; in Fusion 360, raise refinement to High.
My STL looks blocky or faceted - what went wrong?
The tessellation setting was too coarse. Re-export from the original
.step with a finer deviation value - the STEP geometry itself is still exact.Does a STEP assembly export as separate STL parts?
Most tools merge all assembly parts into one
.stl by default. Export each body individually if you need separate files per part. Can I go straight from STEP to G-code?
Not directly - first convert
.step to .stl, then open the STL in a slicer such as Cura or PrusaSlicer to generate G-code with your print settings.Programs that convert STEP: TurboCAD · 3D Object Converter · PolyTrans|CAD+DCC · SolidWorks · CATIA · 3ds Max (3D Studio Max) · Alibre Design Professional · Creo Parametric
