How to convert STP to STL

  1. Add your .STP file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
  2. Convert it to .STL in a few seconds.
  3. Download your new .STL file.

What to expect

  • STL is a lossy format - it stores triangles, not exact surfaces; always keep the original .stp as your master file.
  • Curved surfaces become faceted if tessellation is too coarse; lower the chord deviation in the export dialog (e.g. 0.05 mm or finer) for smooth results.
  • STL carries no unit information - confirm your slicer is set to the same units as the original STP model (usually millimeters) to avoid scaling errors.

Frequently asked questions

Will dimensions stay accurate after converting STP to STL?
Yes - triangle coordinates are derived from the exact B-rep geometry, so dimensions are preserved within the tessellation tolerance you choose. Measure a known feature in your slicer before printing to confirm.
Why do cylinders and fillets look faceted in my STL?
The tessellation deviation was set too high during export. Re-export with a finer chord tolerance - 0.05 mm or lower is a reasonable target for printable parts with curved surfaces.
Can I convert STL back to STP?
Not meaningfully - you get a mesh body in the CAD tool, not a parametric solid. Reconstructing exact B-rep geometry from a mesh is a separate, specialized process and does not recover the original CAD data.
Are .STP and .STEP the same format?
Yes - both extensions refer to the same ISO 10303-21 format; .stp is simply the older three-letter spelling. The conversion process is identical for both.
