How to convert STEP to DXF
- Add your .STEP file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .DXF in a few seconds.
- Download your new .DXF file.
What to expect
- 3D depth is always lost: the DXF contains only the 2D lines, arcs, and curves of the chosen projection - no thickness, internal features, or material data.
- STEP files use millimetres by default; confirm your DXF export is also in mm to avoid a 25.4× scale error if the downstream tool expects inches.
- If the
.stepfile is an assembly, isolate the single part you need before projecting - exporting an entire assembly view to DXF is rarely useful.
Frequently asked questions
Will the DXF contain dimensions or just outlines?
By default you get clean 2D outlines - lines, arcs, and splines - which is what laser cutters require. Add dimensions manually in AutoCAD or your drawing tool if needed.
Is anything else lost besides depth?
Yes: internal geometry, features hidden in the chosen view, surface properties, and material data are all absent from the exported
.dxf.Can I export multiple views at once?
In FreeCAD's TechDraw workbench or Fusion 360's Drawing workspace you can place several views on a sheet and export them all to a single
.dxf.Why does my exported DXF look empty?
The projection may have landed on a face with no visible outline at that angle; try a different view (top, front, or side) or use a cross-section.
