Why convert MBOX to EML?
An .mbox file concatenates all messages into one large text file. Individual .eml files are easier to share, open on double-click in most email clients, and archive one message at a time. If you received a Gmail Google Takeout export as a single large .mbox and need specific messages out of it, splitting to EML is the practical approach.
How to convert MBOX to EML
Mozilla Thunderbird + ImportExportTools NG FREE
Import the .mbox via ImportExportTools NG > Import mbox file, then right-click the folder and choose Export all messages in the folder > EML format to get one .eml per message.
Apple Mail FREE
Use Mailbox > Import Mailboxes > Files in mbox format, then select messages and drag them to a Finder folder; each dragged message is saved as an .eml file.

- No content is lost: MBOX and EML use the same underlying RFC 5322 / MIME format, so the export is essentially a split rather than a re-encoding.
- Headers, HTML body, plain-text body, and attachments all survive intact.
- For large mailboxes with thousands of messages, Thunderbird + ImportExportTools NG is much faster than the drag-out method in Apple Mail.
