Why convert GIF to SVG?
GIF is a palette-indexed raster format - every pixel has a position and a color index. SVG is an XML-based vector format that describes shapes, paths, and curves mathematically. Converting pixel data to vector paths requires auto-tracing, which approximates the original image and works well only on simple flat-color graphics. Tools that embed the GIF inside an SVG <image> tag produce a file with an .svg extension that is not actually scalable.
How to convert GIF to SVG
Inkscape OPEN-SOURCE
Open the .gif in Inkscape, then use Path > Trace Bitmap to auto-trace it into SVG paths. Works best on simple logos and flat-color graphics with clean edges.
CorelDraw Graphics Suite APP
Open the .gif in CorelDraw and use the PowerTRACE function to convert it to vector paths, then save as SVG.

- Tools that place a GIF inside an SVG
<image>tag produce a file with an.svgextension but containing raster pixels - it does not scale without loss and is not a true vector conversion. - Auto-tracing produces the best results on simple logos and icons with clean flat colors. Complex or photographic GIFs produce cluttered, unusable SVG output.
- For animated GIFs, there is no automated tool that reliably converts GIF frame data into SVG animations. Convert to MP4 or WebP for a more efficient animated format.
