Convert EASM to STP

Can you convert EASM to STP?
QUICK ANSWER
Is it possible to convert EASM to STP?
No - not a direct conversion.

Ask the sender to export an STP file from their original SolidWorks assembly; .stp and .step are the same format and any SolidWorks user can produce one in seconds. If the EASM was published with precise-geometry export enabled, eDrawings Viewer may show a Save As option worth checking first.

Why convert EASM to STP?

STP is the three-letter extension spelling of STEP (ISO 10303); the two extensions are interchangeable. An EASM (eDrawings Assembly) is a publish-and-share format from SolidWorks that stores tessellated visual mesh for display rather than the boundary-representation solids .stp needs. Running such a file through any converter produces either an error or a broken STP shell.

How to convert EASM to STP

SolidWorks APP

Ask the sender to open the original .sldasm in SolidWorks and use File > Save As > STEP/STP; both extensions produce the same file and are accepted by all CAD tools.

About these formats

Quality & what to watch

  • Without B-rep solid data in the EASM there is nothing for a converter to extract - the file normally holds only a tessellated mesh for rendering.
  • If the publisher enabled precise-geometry export, open the .easm in the free eDrawings Viewer and check File > Save As for any export options before concluding no path exists.
  • STL (mesh-only, for 3D printing) is more likely to succeed than STP when the EASM does contain exportable geometry, because STL matches the tessellated data already in the file.

Frequently asked questions

Is STP different from STEP?
.step and .stp are two extensions for the same ISO 10303 format; the files are interchangeable and choosing between them is a matter of what your collaborator expects.
Why do some sites list EASM-to-STP as a supported conversion?
They cannot perform it - without solid geometry in the EASM the output would be empty or corrupt.
What can I do with the EASM if I cannot get a STP file?
Open it in the free eDrawings Viewer to view, rotate, and measure the assembly; you may also be able to export an STL if the publisher enabled geometry export.
