How to convert DDS to JPG
- Add your .DDS file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .JPG in a few seconds.
- Download your new .JPG file.
What to expect
- Alpha channel is lost - if the DDS uses DXT3/DXT5 transparency, that data is silently discarded; use PNG instead if transparency matters.
- Do not use JPG for normal maps or specular maps - lossy compression introduces artifacts in their smooth gradients and will corrupt them.
- Mipmaps stored inside the DDS file are dropped; only the full-resolution layer is exported to JPG.
Frequently asked questions
Can I batch-convert a folder of DDS files to JPG?
Yes - XnView MP and IrfanView both have batch-conversion dialogs;
texconv also accepts wildcards: texconv -ft jpg *.dds.Should I convert to JPG or PNG?
Use PNG if the texture has an alpha channel, is a normal map, or will be used in any pipeline. Use JPG only for diffuse textures where smaller file size matters and transparency is not needed.
Why does my DDS open as a black or garbled image?
The texture likely uses BC6H or BC7 with a DX10 header that the viewer does not support - try XnView MP, GIMP, or
texconv, which handle all BC formats.Can I convert back from JPG to DDS?
Technically yes, but the JPG data is already lossy so the reconstructed DDS will not match the original; always keep the original
.dds if you need it for a game or engine.Programs that convert DDS: Adobe Photoshop · 3D Coat · Paint.NET · DDS Converter · GIMP · GIMP for Mac · GIMP for Linux · XnView MP
