How to convert DDS to BMP
- Add your .DDS file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .BMP in a few seconds.
- Download your new .BMP file.
What to expect
- Alpha channel is dropped - transparency (common in DXT3/DXT5/BC7 textures for glass, hair, or foliage) becomes fully opaque in the BMP.
- Mipmaps are not carried over - only the top-resolution level is exported; the smaller scaled copies inside the DDS are discarded.
- File size increases significantly - a 1024×1024 DXT1 DDS (~512 KB) expands to roughly 3 MB as an uncompressed 24-bit BMP.
Frequently asked questions
Will the BMP look identical to the DDS texture?
Pixel colours match what your viewer shows, but transparent areas become opaque and only the top mipmap level is exported.
IrfanView cannot open my DDS - what should I do?
Install the IrfanView Plugins pack from the same download page; without it, DX10-header formats like BC6H and BC7 will not open.
Is BMP a good intermediate format for game editors?
Only if your tool specifically requires it - for most modern pipelines (Unreal, Unity, Source) PNG is a better choice as it is smaller and keeps transparency.
Can I batch-convert a folder of DDS files to BMP?
Yes - IrfanView's batch mode (File > Batch Conversion) handles entire folders, and XnConvert supports batch conversion across platforms.
