How to convert DDS to PNG
- Add your .DDS file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .PNG in a few seconds.
- Download your new .PNG file.
What to expect
- Only the full-resolution (top-level) image is written to the PNG - the mipmap chain stored in the DDS is discarded.
- Alpha is preserved: DXT5/BC3 and BC7 DDS textures carry their alpha channel through to PNG correctly.
- Any DXT block-compression artifacts already present in the DDS (banding on smooth gradients) will appear in the PNG - they come from the original DDS compression, not from the conversion.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting DDS to PNG lose image quality?
No additional quality is lost beyond what the original DDS compression already removed. Decoding DDS block data to PNG pixels is a lossless step.
Is the alpha channel kept when converting to PNG?
Yes - PNG supports a full alpha channel, and tools like XnView MP, Paint.NET, and the converter above all preserve it from DXT5/BC3 or BC7 DDS textures.
Can I convert a whole folder of DDS files to PNG at once?
Yes. XnView MP has a built-in batch converter under Tools > Batch Convert. On the command line,
texconv -ft png *.dds or magick mogrify -format png *.dds processes an entire folder. Why does my editor show a tiny image when I open the DDS?
Some tools load the lowest mipmap level by default instead of the full-resolution top level. In GIMP, pick level 0 in the open dialog; texconv always outputs the top level by default.
