Why convert DAE to STP?
DAE (COLLADA) stores 3D geometry as a polygon mesh - a surface skin of vertices and triangles designed for games, rendering, and interactive use. STP (STEP) stores solid boundary-representation geometry with manufacturing precision, used in mechanical engineering and CAM workflows. A mesh has no concept of solid thickness, tolerances, or manufacturing intent, so converting it to true STEP solid geometry is a geometry problem, not a file-format problem, and any automated result is a low-quality approximation that most downstream CAD tools reject.
How to convert DAE to STP
FreeCAD OPEN-SOURCE
Import the .dae as a visual reference in FreeCAD and re-model the part from scratch as a proper solid, then export to STEP via File > Export.
Geomagic APP
For simple shapes, use a Geomagic reverse-engineering pipeline to attempt converting the .dae mesh to a solid before exporting to STP - results are low-quality and not suitable for precision manufacturing parts.

About these formats
A DAE file is a COLLADA 3D model stored as plain-text XML. Open it free in Blender on any platform, or on a Mac with Preview. For web and AR use, convert it to glTF/GLB.
Open .DAE details →An STP file is a 3D CAD model - a part or assembly - stored in the ISO 10303 STEP format so it can move between different CAD programs. The fastest free options are FreeCAD, CAD Assistant,…

- Generic online converters will output a
.stpfile from a DAE, but the result is a faceted tessellated shell that most CAD software rejects or imports as a non-editable mesh body rather than a solid. - If the DAE was originally exported from a CAD application, the original solid model still exists there and can be exported to STEP directly - that is the correct path.
- Mesh-to-solid conversion tools exist for simple shapes but do not produce precision engineering geometry suitable for manufacturing.
