Why convert 002 to 001?
A split set named .001, .002, .003 is one large file cut into sequentially numbered byte chunks. The .001 holds the file header (archive signature and index); the .002 holds the next block of raw data. The extension is a position marker, not a format indicator - neither file can meaningfully become the other.
How to convert 002 to 001
7-zip OPEN-SOURCE
Place all parts in one folder and right-click the .001 > 7-Zip > Extract; it reads the .002 and further parts automatically.
WinRAR APP
Open the .001 in WinRAR; it detects and joins all sibling volumes without any extra steps.
PeaZip OPEN-SOURCE
Open the .001 with all parts present in the same folder; PeaZip reassembles and extracts the contents.

- If the
.001is missing, the set cannot be reassembled - the file header is gone and the missing bytes cannot be reconstructed. - Renaming
.002to.001changes only the filename, not the content; the set breaks because two files claim to be the first segment. - There are two types of split sets: split archives (e.g.,
file.7z.001) where a compressed archive was split, and raw byte-split files (e.g.,movie.001) where a single large file was cut into chunks; both require opening the.001first.
Frequently asked questions
Why do some sites list a 002-to-001 converter?
I only have the .002. Can I extract anything from it?
.002 contains raw mid-stream bytes with no header; it is unreadable without the .001 and all other parts. How do I know if my split set is a split archive or raw chunks?
file.7z.001 or file.zip.001; a raw split file has only the number as the extension, e.g., movie.001.
