Why convert USD to ABC?
People move usd to .abc when a downstream tool only reads Alembic geometry caches, or when they need a flat, self-contained cache of animated meshes and points instead of a composed, layered USD scene. Alembic is a common lowest-common-denominator interchange cache in film and VFX pipelines.
How to convert USD to ABC
usdcat (OpenUSD) FREE
With OpenUSD's Alembic plugin built, run usdcat scene.usd --out scene.abc. This writes the composed geometry to an .abc file you can inspect in usdview.
SideFX Houdini
Import the USD in a LOP network, then add a ROP Alembic Output (or File Cache set to .abc) and write the cooked stage out as scene.abc.
Autodesk Maya
Load the stage with the USD (mayaUsd) plugin, select the geometry, then use Cache > Alembic Cache > Export Selection to Alembic (the abcExport command) to save .abc.

- USD composition (layers, references, variants, instancing) is flattened into baked per-frame geometry; you cannot round-trip back to the original layered scene.
- The OpenUSD Alembic plugin does not translate FaceSet, NuPatch or Light schemas, and Component Ops are flattened into 4x4 matrices.
- Materials and shading networks are not carried by Alembic geometry; only geometry, transforms and standard primvars survive.
