Convert PES to EXP

QUICK ANSWER
Is it possible to convert PES to EXP?
Yes - PES converts to EXP.

Open the .pes file in Wilcom TrueSizer (free) and export as .exp. The needle-path data transfers intact, but thread color assignments may shift because EXP uses a different palette than PES.

Why convert PES to EXP?

EXP is the native format for Melco embroidery machines and some older Bernina models. A design distributed in PES format cannot be stitched on those machines without converting it first. Both formats encode needle-path stitch data, so the conversion moves stitch commands from one dialect to another.

About these formats

Quality & what to watch

  • Thread color assignments shift during conversion - EXP uses a different palette than PES; check the color sequence after export and reassign threads as needed.
  • The needle path (stitches, jumps, trims, color-change stops) transfers intact; stitch count and design geometry are preserved.
  • EXP carries less metadata than PES - no embedded thumbnail and less color information - so converting back to .pes is not straightforward.

Frequently asked questions

Which machines use EXP format?
EXP is the native format for Melco embroidery machines and some older Bernina models.
Does the PES version number affect EXP export?
No. Software reads the stitch block regardless of PES version (v1-v11), so version mismatches that affect Brother machines do not affect this conversion.
Is stitch data preserved during the conversion?
Yes. The actual needle path, stitch count, and geometry transfer intact; only the thread palette mapping changes.
Can I convert EXP back to PES?
A basic round-trip is possible with the same tools, but color metadata and the embedded preview present in the original PES will not be recovered.
