Why convert NWD to DWG?
When Navisworks publishes an NWD, it merges geometry from many source files into a frozen, read-only snapshot for viewing and clash review. The parametric instructions, layer structures, block definitions, and dimensioned geometry that AutoCAD expects in a .dwg are not stored in the NWD. Even if geometry could be extracted, the output would be an undifferentiated mesh with no layers, blocks, or dimensions.
About these formats
An NWD file is a published Navisworks 3D/BIM model - a self-contained snapshot of a building or infrastructure project that bundles all combined CAD geometry, viewpoints, markups and review…

- Navisworks does not include a
DWGexport in any version - it can publish DWF snapshots but not editable AutoCAD drawings. - Third-party tools that advertise
NWDtoDWGconversion produce raw geometry dumps with no layers, blocks, or constraints - not usable drawings. - If the project was authored in Revit, ask for a
DWGexport from Revit rather than attempting to extract one from theNWD.
Frequently asked questions
Is there any software that converts NWD to DWG?
DWG from an NWD; any that claim to output raw mesh geometry with no layers, blocks, or CAD structure. Can Navisworks export a DWG?
I need the drawings for a renovation project - what do I do?
NWD and request the original DWG or RVT source files, which are a standard contractual deliverable on most BIM projects.
