Why convert NWD to NWF?
An NWF (Navisworks Fileset) stores only file paths to source models and markup data - it contains no embedded geometry of its own. An NWD (Navisworks Document) is produced by publishing a scene: it bakes all referenced geometry, viewpoints, and markups into a self-contained file and discards the original file references. Because the NWD never records the source-file paths that an NWF needs, reconstruction is impossible.
How to convert NWD to NWF
Autodesk NavisWorks FREE
Open the NWD directly in Autodesk NavisWorks Freedom for full 3D navigation, measurements, section cuts, and access to all saved viewpoints and markups - no NWF is needed for viewing.

- An
NWFholds only file references and markup data; the geometry always comes from the referenced source files, which anNWDdoes not expose. - Even Autodesk NavisWorks Manage cannot recreate a working
NWFfrom anNWD- the source-file paths thatNWFneeds are not stored inside theNWD. - If you need clash detection or live editing, you need the original
NWFand its source models from the BIM coordinator.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the NWF not contain the geometry I see in the NWD?
NWF stores only file paths and markup data; geometry is always read from the referenced source models at open time. Publishing to NWD embeds that geometry, but there is no reverse operation. Can I open the NWD in Navisworks Manage and save it as NWF?
NWD for review but cannot recreate a working NWF because the referenced source-file paths do not exist inside the NWD.I only have the NWD - can I add new markups?
NWD; this does not produce a usable NWF project.
