Why convert NWD to RVT?
A Navisworks NWD holds only the display mesh and property metadata read from source models at publish time - Revit families, type parameters, constraints, phasing data, and MEP connections are stripped away during publishing. An RVT (Autodesk Revit Project File) is a parametric BIM container where every element has authoring intelligence that no software can reconstruct from a display mesh.
About these formats
An NWD file is a published Navisworks 3D/BIM model - a self-contained snapshot of a building or infrastructure project that bundles all combined CAD geometry, viewpoints, markups and review…

- What some sites call an
NWDtoRVTconverter would produce raw geometry with no Revit intelligence - not a usable building model. - You can click any element in the
NWDin Navisworks Freedom and read its embedded properties, but you cannot edit them or export them to Revit. - IFC is a more realistic alternative: ask the model author to export
IFCdirectly from Revit, which preserves element types and properties in an open format.
Frequently asked questions
Why can't software reconstruct an RVT from an NWD?
NWD contains only the rendered mesh, not this authoring data, so reconstruction would mean re-modelling from scratch. The project team won't share the RVT - what are my options?
RVT is often a contractual deliverable; alternatively, request an IFC or discipline-specific DWG export from the model author.
