How to convert MKV to OGG
- Add your .MKV file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .OGG in a few seconds.
- Download your new .OGG file.
What to expect
- Video is removed entirely; OGG output is audio only.
- Vorbis is a lossy codec, so encoding from an MKV audio track is a lossy step (and a second one if the source audio was already compressed).
- OGG is widely supported by open-source players but rejected by some hardware; MP3 is more universally accepted.
Frequently asked questions
Does MKV to OGG keep the video?
No. OGG here is Vorbis audio in an Ogg container, so the video is discarded and only the sound is kept.
Is the audio re-encoded when converting to OGG?
Yes, in practice the audio is encoded to the Vorbis codec, which is a lossy compression. Starting from an already-lossy MKV audio track means a second lossy pass, so keep quality expectations modest.
Why convert MKV to OGG?
To pull out just the soundtrack in a free, patent-unencumbered audio format that works well in open-source players and many games and applications.
What plays an OGG file?
VLC plays it on any platform, and foobar2000 or MediaMonkey handle it on Windows. Some devices such as iPhones and car stereos may reject OGG, in which case MP3 is a safer choice.
