How to convert CR2 to PNG

  1. Add your .CR2 file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
  2. Convert it to .PNG in a few seconds.
  3. Download your new .PNG file.

What to expect

  • PNG is lossless but not raw - the exported PNG cannot recover the original CR2's highlight and shadow latitude; always keep the CR2 as your master file.
  • Choose 16-bit PNG when you plan further editing in Photoshop or GIMP; 8-bit is sufficient for web publishing.
  • PNG does not preserve full EXIF or Canon maker-note data; if metadata retention is critical, export to TIFF instead.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting CR2 to PNG reduce image quality?
The PNG itself is lossless, so there are no compression artifacts. However, the raw-to-PNG step is one-way - the raw file's dynamic range and non-destructive editability are not present in the PNG.
Can I batch-convert CR2 files to PNG?
Yes. darktable and RawTherapee both have batch export built in. On Windows, IrfanView's Batch Conversion (File menu) is the fastest option for default-rendered output.
Why choose PNG over JPEG for this conversion?
JPEG uses lossy compression and introduces artifacts, especially on smooth gradients. PNG keeps every pixel exactly as exported, making it the right choice when lossless output is required.
Will the PNG look different from the preview I see in my camera?
Possibly - the in-camera JPEG preview is processed with Canon's picture style, while raw development software applies its own defaults. You can adjust the tone curve and colour profile to match the camera look.
