What to expect

  • DRM-protected .azw3 files bought from Amazon cannot be converted - Calibre and every other tool will refuse them.
  • MOBI does not support the HTML5/CSS3 features in AZW3 (KF8), so complex layouts, custom fonts, and drop caps may be stripped or approximated.
  • Many .azw3 files already contain a hidden legacy MOBI section - try renaming the file to .mobi before converting; some older Kindles will read it directly.

Can I convert a Kindle Store book from AZW3 to MOBI?
No - Amazon-purchased books carry DRM that blocks all conversion tools. Only DRM-free .azw3 files can be converted.
Will images and formatting survive the conversion?
Images are preserved, but formatting is partially lost. MOBI cannot reproduce the HTML5/CSS3 styling that AZW3 uses, so complex layouts and custom fonts are simplified.
My old Kindle already opens the AZW3 file - do I need to convert?
Probably not. Many AZW3 files include an embedded MOBI section that older Kindles read automatically; try renaming the file to .mobi first.
Is MOBI still worth using?
Only for Kindle hardware from around 2012 or earlier. For any current device, AZW3 is the better format and EPUB via Send to Kindle is the easiest path for personal documents.
