What to expect

  • Lossy-to-lossy re-encode: a second compression pass is applied, with no quality gain over the source.
  • Channel count is preserved from the source; converting does not create surround from stereo.
  • Metadata such as titles and artwork generally does not carry into a raw AC-3 stream.

Frequently asked questions

What quality can I expect from AAC to AC3?
Both are lossy, so converting one to the other is a re-encode that adds a second round of compression loss. The result is fine for playback but will not sound better than the source AAC and cannot recover detail already discarded.
Why convert AAC to AC3?
AC3 (Dolby Digital) is the audio format used on DVDs and digital TV and is expected by many home-theatre receivers and video authoring tools. Converting is useful when a device or workflow specifically requires an AC-3 stream.
Where does AC3 play?
VLC plays AC3 free on any platform, and Windows Media Player supports it on Windows 10/11. It is also natively handled by most AV receivers and DVD/Blu-ray equipment.
Will I get surround sound from a stereo AAC?
No. AC-3 supports up to 5.1 channels, but conversion cannot invent channels that are not in the source. A stereo AAC stays stereo inside the AC3 file.
