Зачем конвертировать ASS в MP4?

MP4 has no practical support for styled ASS subtitle tracks on most devices (phones, smart TVs, media players). Burning the subtitles in is the only reliable way to display the full ASS formatting - fonts, colors, positioning, karaoke - on those devices.

Run ffmpeg -i video.mp4 -vf "ass=subtitles.ass" -c:a copy output.mp4 to burn the subtitles into the video; audio is copied without change.

HandBrake OPEN-SOURCE

Load the video in HandBrake, add the .ass file in the Subtitles tab, check the Burn In option, choose MP4 output, and start encoding.

  • Burning subtitles (hardsub) is irreversible - the text becomes part of every frame and cannot be removed without re-encoding again.
  • Re-encoding decodes and re-compresses the video, causing a small quality loss compared to the source.
  • If the .ass references fonts not installed on the system, FFmpeg falls back to a default font, changing the visual appearance of styled subtitles.
