Wat is het QOI-bestandsformaat?
Een .qoi-bestand is een Quite OK Image, een lossless rasterafbeeldingsformaat gecreëerd door Dominic Szablewski en uitgebracht op 24 november 2021. Het is ontworpen om veel eenvoudiger en sneller te zijn dan .png terwijl de bestanden ongeveer even groot blijven. De volledige specificatie past op één pagina, en de referentie-encoder en -decoder beslaan ongeveer 300 regels C-code.
Binnenin begint een .qoi-bestand met een 14-byte header die start met de ASCII-markering qoif, gevolgd door de breedte en hoogte van de afbeelding, een kanaal-byte (3 voor RGB of 4 for RGBA) en een kleurruimte-byte. De pixels die volgen zijn gecomprimeerd met run-length encoding, een kleine cache van recent geziene kleuren en delta-codering ten opzichte van de vorige pixel. Het formaat is volledig lossless, ondersteunt 8-bits alfa en is in het publieke domein geplaatst onder CC0.
Beveiliging & veiligheid
RISICO: LOWQOI is a plain image format with no scripting, macros, or embedded executable content, so a .qoi file cannot run code on its own. It also has no checksum, so a corrupted file may simply fail to decode. As with any image type, the only real risk comes from bugs in a specific decoder, so keep your viewer up to date.

Het codeert ongeveer 20 tot 50 keer sneller en decodeert 3 tot 4 keer sneller dan PNG bij een vergelijkbare bestandsgrootte, wat het handig maakt voor games en tools. PNG comprimeert meestal iets kleiner en wordt bijna overal ondersteund, dus QOI is een afweging tussen snelheid en eenvoud in plaats van een directe vervanging.
Is QOI lossless?
Ja. QOI slaat elke pixel exact op, en onderzoekers van de EPFL hebben in 2022 formeel geverifieerd dat de compressie lossless is.
Ondersteunt QOI transparantie?
