Why convert XMP to JPG?

An .xmp sidecar is an XML/RDF document introduced by Adobe in 2001 storing text parameters such as exposure, crop, and white balance; it contains no pixel data whatsoever. A .jpg is a DCT-compressed raster bitmap storing actual pixel color values - applying the XMP edit instructions requires the original RAW file to exist as the source image.

Quality & what to watch

  • The .xmp sidecar must sit in the same folder as the RAW file and share the same base filename for applications to read it automatically.
  • If the original RAW file has been deleted, the edit instructions in the .xmp have no source image to apply to and a JPG cannot be produced.
  • In Lightroom Classic, edits are also stored in the catalog; in Adobe Camera Raw without a catalog, the .xmp may be the only record of your adjustments.
