Why convert VWX to MCD?
A .vwx file is the Vectorworks design format introduced in 2008, which replaced the older .mcd MiniCAD/VectorWorks format. The two formats hold the same type of CAD/BIM design data but have different binary structures, and the relationship runs only forward: old .mcd files are opened in Vectorworks and saved as .vwx. Vectorworks has offered no .mcd export option since 2008, and no third-party tool has reverse-engineered a bridge.
How to convert VWX to MCD
VectorWorks - Export DWG/DXF APP
Open the .vwx in Vectorworks and use File > Export > Export DWG/DXF to produce a file any other CAD tool can read, or File > Export > Export Vectorworks to target an older Vectorworks version.
VectorWorks - Export PDF APP
For non-editable sharing, open the .vwx in Vectorworks, switch to a sheet layer, and use File > Export > Export PDF to produce a file anyone can view without CAD software.

About these formats
A VWX file is a design document created by Vectorworks, a CAD and BIM application used in architecture, landscape design, and entertainment design. Only Vectorworks opens it natively - no…
Open .VWX details →An MCD file is most likely a legacy 2D/3D CAD drawing from Vectorworks (formerly MiniCAD), used through Vectorworks 12 in 2005. Open it in Vectorworks - a time-limited trial works for a…
Open .MCD details →Quality & what to watch
- Vectorworks reads .mcd files for legacy compatibility but cannot write them; the format has been effectively retired since 2008.
- DWG or DXF is the correct interchange format for sharing with other CAD applications - not any .mcd route.
- A .vwx saved in a newer Vectorworks version cannot be opened in an older one; ask the sender to export from their version if version mismatch is the underlying concern.
