Why convert VWX to DXF?
VWX is a proprietary binary format readable only by Vectorworks. .dxf is an open CAD interchange format introduced in 1982 and supported by virtually every CAD application, including AutoCAD, BricsCAD, LibreCAD, and FreeCAD. Converting VWX to DXF lets you hand off drawings to colleagues or clients who use any DXF-compatible software without a Vectorworks licence.
How to convert VWX to DXF
VectorWorks APP
Open the .vwx file, go to File > Export > Export DWG/DXF, set the format to DXF, choose a version (AutoCAD 2013 or 2018 for wide compatibility), select layers and classes to include, then click OK and save.

- 3D geometry is projected to 2D when exporting to 2D DXF; use the 3D export option in the dialog to preserve solids.
- Both Vectorworks design layers and classes map to DXF layers on export, which can result in more layers than expected in the receiving file.
- Parametric objects may come through as exploded geometry; BIM data such as IFC records and worksheet content does not carry over to DXF.
