How to convert SVG to ICO

  1. Add your .SVG file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
  2. Convert it to .ICO in a few seconds.
  3. Download your new .ICO file.

What to expect

  • A proper ICO embeds multiple sizes (16, 32, 48, and 256 px) - a single-size .ico may appear blurry or be scaled incorrectly by the OS in contexts that expect a different dimension.
  • Export at 32-bit color depth to keep transparency; 8-bit (256-color) output replaces soft edges and partial transparency with a hard mask.
  • The 256 px slot inside an ICO is stored as a compressed PNG stream - this is by design, and all current versions of Windows and modern browsers handle it correctly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my SVG as a favicon directly without converting to ICO?
Modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) support SVG favicons via a <link rel="icon"> tag. ICO is still needed as a fallback for the /favicon.ico root path that some tools and older browsers request automatically.
Will the transparent background in my SVG carry through to the ICO?
Yes - converters and tools like GIMP and ImageMagick default to 32-bit ICO output, which preserves full alpha transparency. Avoid 8-bit export if your icon has soft or semi-transparent edges.
My SVG has fine text and gradients - will they look right in the ICO?
They render well at 256×256 but can become unreadable at 16×16. Preview the icon at small sizes and consider simplifying the design to solid shapes and thicker strokes for small-icon use.
Does ImageMagick need Inkscape installed to convert SVG?
ImageMagick handles simple SVGs on its own but delegates complex files to Inkscape or librsvg. If the output looks blank or clipped, install Inkscape and export the SVG to PNG there first, then convert the PNG to ICO.
