Convert RAR to ISO

Can you convert RAR to ISO?
QUICK ANSWER
Is it possible to convert RAR to ISO?
No - not a direct conversion.

Extract the .rar with 7-Zip or a similar tool first. If the archive contains an .iso, it appears after extraction and can be used directly. If it contains loose files you want in a disc image, author a new .iso from those extracted files using a separate tool.

Why convert RAR to ISO?

RAR (Roshal ARchive, 1993) is a proprietary compressed container that holds arbitrary files. ISO is a raw sector-by-sector image of an optical disc (ISO 9660 / UDF) storing the exact disc structure including bootable data. RAR has no disc layout and ISO is not a compression container - there is no data in a .rar that maps to an optical disc structure.

How to convert RAR to ISO

7-Zip FREE

Extract the .rar with 7-Zip; if an .iso is inside, it comes out as-is and can be mounted or burned directly. If the contents are loose files, use a separate ISO authoring tool on the extracted files.

Wii Backup Manager FREE

If the .rar contains a Wii game image, extract the archive first, then use Wii Backup Manager to manage or convert the game disc image to the required format.

About these formats

Quality & what to watch

  • If the .rar contains an .iso file, extract the archive - the .iso comes out intact with no conversion needed.
  • No tool performs RAR-to-ISO conversion because the formats are unrelated; sites advertising this operation are misleading.
  • Repacking .rar contents as .zip or .7z is a legitimate archive-to-archive operation; ISO is not an archive format in that sense.

Frequently asked questions

Can a RAR file contain an ISO?
Yes - someone may have packed an .iso inside a .rar to compress or split it; extract the .rar and the .iso comes out as-is.
Why do some sites claim they can convert RAR to ISO?
No legitimate tool performs this conversion; sites advertising it either fail silently or are misleading.
What can I legitimately convert a RAR to?
RAR converts cleanly to .zip or .7z by extracting and repacking - those are real archive-to-archive operations.
