What to expect

  • Fujifilm X-series cameras use an X-Trans sensor array; generic converters may produce smeared or wormy detail - use RawTherapee or darktable for correct X-Trans demosaicing.
  • Export at 16-bit when the TIFF will be edited further; 8-bit is acceptable for final print or web output but discards half the tonal range developed from the raw.
  • A 16-bit TIFF from a 26 MP RAF can reach ~150 MB uncompressed - enable LZW lossless compression in the export settings to roughly halve the file size with no quality penalty.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting RAF to TIFF reduce quality?
Not if you export a 16-bit TIFF - the raw data is developed and written without lossy compression. Choosing 8-bit reduces bit depth but still avoids compression artefacts.
Can I rename a `.raf` file to `.tiff`?
No - RAF has a proprietary internal structure and renaming it will not produce a valid TIFF. You must open it in raw software and export.
Why is the TIFF so much larger than the RAF?
A RAF stores compressed raw sensor data (25-50 MB), while a 16-bit TIFF holds a fully expanded three-channel image that can reach 130-160 MB. Enable LZW compression in the export settings to reduce this with no quality loss.
Which free program gives the best results with Fujifilm RAF files?
RawTherapee is generally regarded as having the most refined X-Trans demosaicing among free tools, reducing the smeared detail artefact that older software produces with Fuji raws.
