Why convert PRT to OBJ?
Creo .prt files store exact solid geometry (B-rep) in a proprietary format. .obj is a plain-text mesh format used by renderers, game engines, and visualization tools. Engineers convert PRT to OBJ when a downstream pipeline needs a polygon mesh rather than a CAD solid, while choosing .step for CAD-to-CAD exchange that must preserve exact geometry.
How to convert PRT to OBJ
PolyTrans|CAD+DCC APP
Import the .prt file directly and export to .obj. PolyTrans supports native Creo geometry and lets you control tessellation quality before export.
3ds Max (3D Studio Max) APP
Open or import the .prt via a CAD import plugin, then use File > Export to save as .obj. Tessellation settings control polygon density.
TransMagic APP
Open the .prt in TransMagic and use its Export function to save as .obj. TransMagic reads native Creo files without requiring a Creo license.
CAD Assistant FREE
Drag the .prt onto CAD Assistant (Open Cascade, free) and use File > Export > OBJ. Adjust tessellation quality in the export dialog before saving.

About these formats
A PRT file is a single 3D part created by PTC Creo Parametric (formerly Pro/ENGINEER). To open it without buying Creo, use the free PTC Creo View or eDrawings viewer. To move the part to…
Open .PRT details →An OBJ file is a 3D model in the Wavefront OBJ format - a plain-text list of vertices, faces, and surface normals. Open it free with Blender, the Microsoft 3D Viewer on Windows, or…

- B-rep geometry is lost: OBJ is a polygon mesh approximation, not an exact solid. Parametric history, sketches, dimensions, and feature data cannot be recovered from the output.
- Tessellation quality controls polygon count. A coarse setting produces blocky curves; fine tessellation gives smoother results but a larger file. Adjust this in the export dialog.
- Creo saves part revisions as
part.prt.1,part.prt.2etc. The highest-numbered file is the latest version - open that one.
