What to expect

  • The PNG is embedded as a raster inside the EPS; it is not converted to scalable vectors.
  • EPS is a PostScript-based, print-oriented format and can carry executable code - handle unknown files cautiously.
  • The result is larger than the PNG and will not display in Microsoft Office, which blocks EPS images.

Frequently asked questions

Is a PNG vectorized when converted to EPS?
No. EPS can hold vector data, but a PNG is raster, so the conversion embeds the pixels inside the PostScript wrapper rather than tracing them into vectors - the image content stays a bitmap.
Why convert a PNG to EPS?
EPS is a long-standing print and page-layout format, so wrapping a PNG as EPS lets it be placed into PostScript-based print workflows and layout tools that expect .eps artwork.
What opens the EPS result?
Inkscape and GIMP open EPS (both need Ghostscript installed). Note that Microsoft Office has blocked EPS images since 2017 for security reasons, so it will not display there.
Is EPS safe, and does the file get larger?
EPS contains executable PostScript code and its interpreters have been exploited, so treat unknown .eps files with care. The embedded bitmap also makes the EPS larger than the source PNG.
