Why convert PAT to BMP?
BMP is an uncompressed raster format accepted by most Windows applications without a decoder, making it a practical choice for legacy tools, game engines, or Windows resource editors that do not accept PNG. The .pat tile is a small bitmap internally, so exporting to BMP simply unpacks it to a flat standalone image with no quality loss. See also .png, which is smaller and supports transparency.

- GIMP
.patand Photoshop.patare incompatible binary formats - load each in its native application or the file will fail to open. - BMP does not support transparency; any alpha channel in the pattern tile becomes opaque when exported to BMP - use PNG to preserve transparency.
- BMP is uncompressed, so the output file will be larger than an equivalent PNG of the same tile.
