Why convert PAK to ZIP?
The most common reason is redistribution: packing extracted game assets into a ZIP for sharing or backup. Some mod pipelines also accept ZIP instead of a game-specific PAK, so repacking is necessary for toolchain compatibility. The game engine itself still cannot load a ZIP in place of its native PAK format.
How to convert PAK to ZIP
7-Zip FREE
Right-click the .pak and choose 7-Zip > Open archive; if it opens, rename a copy to .zip. If it fails, extract the folder with Dragon UnPACKer first, then use 7-Zip > Add to archive > ZIP on the extracted contents.
Dragon UnPACKer FREE
Open the .pak in Dragon UnPACKer, extract all files to a folder, then repack that folder as a ZIP using 7-Zip or WinRAR.
PakExplorer FREE
For Quake/id-style PAK files, open in PakExplorer, select all, extract to a folder, then create a ZIP from the extracted contents with any archive manager.

- The .pak extension is reused by many unrelated engine formats - which tool to use depends on which game produced the file.
- Quake III and Quake IV used .pk3 and .pk4 instead of .pak; those files are genuine ZIP archives and open directly in 7-Zip without any extraction step.
- Some PAK files from modern engines are partially or fully encrypted, in which case no extractor can access the contents without the engine's decryption keys.
