What to expect

  • MPEG-1 source files (VCD-era .mpg at 352×240 or 352×288) are not valid inside a DVD-Video .vob - re-encode to MPEG-2 first.
  • A standalone .vob without IFO and BUP navigation files will not play on a hardware DVD player; use DVDStyler to produce the full VIDEO_TS folder.
  • DVD-Video requires AC-3 or LPCM audio; if your .mpg carries MP2 audio, re-encode the audio track to AC-3 for full player compatibility.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just rename my .mpg file to .vob?
Sometimes - if the source is MPEG-2, many software players will open it. But renaming does not create a valid DVD-Video structure, so hardware players will not recognize it without accompanying IFO files.
Will I lose quality converting MPG to VOB?
No, if the source is MPEG-2 and you remux without re-encoding. Quality loss only happens when transcoding, such as converting from MPEG-1 or changing the audio codec.
What is the difference between a .vob file and a VIDEO_TS folder?
A .vob file holds the video and audio data, while a VIDEO_TS folder is the full DVD structure containing .vob, IFO, and BUP files - hardware players need the complete folder to navigate the disc.
My MPG is from an old VCD - will it work as a VOB on a DVD player?
No; VCD footage uses MPEG-1, which DVD-Video does not support inside a .vob. Re-encode it to MPEG-2 first using ffmpeg or DVDStyler.
