How to convert MPG to M4V
- Add your .MPG file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
- Convert it to .M4V in a few seconds.
- Download your new .M4V file.
What to expect
- The source is re-encoded to H.264/AAC in an MP4-family container; this is a lossy step.
- The output is DRM-free - FairPlay protection only applies to Apple-store purchases and is never added here.
- M4V is effectively MP4 under a different extension, so it plays anywhere MP4 does.
Frequently asked questions
How faithful is MPG converted to M4V?
M4V is an MP4-family container with H.264 video and AAC audio, so ffmpeg re-encodes the MPEG source into those codecs. The re-encode is lossy, with quality governed by the chosen bitrate.
Why convert MPG to M4V?
M4V is Apple's video container for iTunes, Apple TV, and QuickTime environments. It is useful when targeting Apple playback where the .m4v extension is expected.
Where does the M4V file open?
A converted M4V has no DRM, so it plays in VLC, QuickTime, and Windows Media Player just like an MP4. Only store-purchased M4V carries Apple's FairPlay DRM, which this conversion does not add.
What is lost in the conversion?
Re-encoding the MPEG video and audio discards some detail that cannot be recovered. Aside from the extension and Apple-oriented defaults, the output is essentially an MP4.
