Frequently asked questions
Is M4V output the same quality as the MKV?
M4V is an MP4-family container that normally carries H.264 video. If the MKV is already H.264, quality can be largely preserved; if the video is re-encoded, the pass is lossy. It will not look sharper than the original.
Why convert MKV to M4V?
M4V is Apple's video flavor used by iTunes and the Apple TV app, so people convert to it to fit cleanly into the Apple/iTunes and QuickTime ecosystem.
Will the converted M4V play on Apple devices and elsewhere?
A converted M4V is DRM-free, so it opens in VLC, QuickTime and generally anywhere MP4 plays, including Apple devices. It is essentially MP4 with an Apple-oriented extension.
Does the conversion add Apple FairPlay DRM or copy it?
No. The conversion produces a plain, unprotected M4V; FairPlay DRM is only applied to media sold through Apple's store and cannot be added here. Converting a DRM-protected purchase is not possible without the store's rights.
