Why convert MKV to DIVX?
MKV (Matroska) is an EBML-based multimedia container introduced in 2002 that wraps video, audio, subtitles, and chapters. The .divx extension denotes the DivX Media Format, an AVI-based container introduced in 2006, but no mainstream converter writes to this specific format. The underlying DivX codec (MPEG-4 Part 2) has been displaced by H.264 and H.265, and most hardware labeled 'DivX certified' also plays H.264 in MP4 or MKV.

- Most DivX-certified devices from the 2010s onward also accept H.264 in MP4 or MKV - try playing the file directly before re-encoding.
- Re-encoding to MPEG-4 Part 2 video always involves quality loss and produces larger files than H.264 at the same visual quality.
- If the device only plays AVI, try remuxing the MKV to AVI first; re-encode only if the device rejects the video codec inside.
