How to convert JP2 to BMP

  1. Add your .JP2 file - drop it in the box above or click to browse.
  2. Convert it to .BMP in a few seconds.
  3. Download your new .BMP file.

What to expect

  • BMP stores every pixel uncompressed - a 3000×2000 image at 24-bit color becomes roughly 17 MB regardless of how small the source .jp2 was; PNG is a lossless alternative that produces far smaller files.
  • IrfanView requires its free PlugIns pack for JPEG 2000 support; standard Windows Paint and Photos cannot open .jp2 files at all.
  • Alpha (transparency) channels and bit depths above 8 bits per channel are not preserved in standard 24-bit .bmp output.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need special software to open a JP2 file?
Standard Windows tools like Paint cannot decode .jp2. Use IrfanView with its free PlugIns pack, XnView MP, or the converter on this page.
Will the BMP look identical to the original JP2?
If the JP2 was lossless, the BMP will be pixel-perfect. If it used lossy compression, the BMP reflects the decoded result - no further quality is lost, but no lost detail is recovered.
Why is the BMP so much larger than the JP2?
JPEG 2000 uses efficient wavelet compression; BMP stores raw uncompressed pixel data, so file size depends only on image dimensions and color depth, not the source file size.
Is PNG a better conversion target than BMP?
In most cases, yes - PNG is also lossless, supports transparency and higher bit depth, and produces files several times smaller than BMP. Use BMP only if a specific application requires it.
