Convert ICS to VCS

QUICK ANSWER
Is it possible to convert ICS to VCS?
Yes - ICS converts to VCS.

Import the .ics into Microsoft Outlook, then save each event as vCalendar Format (.vcs). VTIMEZONE data is stripped during conversion, so events may show incorrect times on the receiving device.

Also to VCS: VCF

Why convert ICS to VCS?

VCS is the vCalendar 1.0 standard from 1996 that .ICS replaced in 1998. Some older phones, PDAs, Lotus Notes configurations, and industrial scheduling tools still require the older .vcs format and will not accept a modern .ics file.

How to convert ICS to VCS

Microsoft Outlook APP

Go to File > Open & Export to import the .ics, then open the event and use File > Save As, selecting vCalendar Format (.vcs). Outlook processes one event at a time this way.

About these formats

Quality & what to watch

  • VTIMEZONE blocks are not supported by vCalendar 1.0; event times are stored as local time, so time zone information is stripped and times may appear wrong on the receiving device.
  • Complex recurrence rules (RRULE) may not convert correctly, as the recurrence syntax changed between iCalendar 2.0 and vCalendar 1.0.
  • iCalendar uses UTF-8 encoding; vCalendar 1.0 uses quoted-printable, so accented or non-Latin characters may appear garbled unless re-encoded.

Frequently asked questions

Why would I use VCS instead of ICS?
VCS is required only by devices and systems that predate iCalendar 2.0, such as certain older Nokia phones and some Lotus Notes configurations. If the target accepts ICS, use ICS.
Does Microsoft Outlook convert multiple events at once?
No - Outlook saves one event at a time to VCS. For batch conversion of a multi-event ICS file, use a dedicated online converter.
What happens to reminders (VALARM) and attendee fields?
VALARM and ATTENDEE fields may be dropped or ignored by vCalendar 1.0 parsers.
