Why convert DXF to AI?
Designers receive CAD geometry as .dxf and need it as editable vector art in Illustrator for layout, branding, or output to vinyl cutters. DXF (introduced 1982) stores the same type of 2D vector geometry that .ai files hold, so shapes transfer well between the two formats.
How to convert DXF to AI
Adobe Illustrator APP
Go to File > Open, select the .dxf, set the scale and unit conversion in the import dialog, then save via File > Save As choosing Adobe Illustrator (.ai) as the format.

- Lines, polylines, arcs, circles, and splines transfer as vector paths; CAD-specific entities (dimensions, hatches, blocks, xrefs) either drop out or arrive ungrouped.
- DXF stores real-world units (mm, inches); set the correct unit in Illustrator's import dialog or the geometry will arrive at the wrong scale.
- The
.aiformat is proprietary and only Adobe software writes it reliably; if the end target also accepts SVG, that is a more portable alternative.

What if I do not have Adobe Illustrator?
.dxf and export SVG; open that SVG in Illustrator to save as .ai. Inkscape cannot write the .ai format directly.
