Why convert DAT to PDF?
The .dat extension has been a generic catch-all data suffix since the DOS/Unix era - hundreds of unrelated programs write their own private layouts under this name. Because there is no shared structure, no PDF engine can determine what to render. A PDF document stores a defined page-description structure; a .dat file stores no equivalent content.
How to convert DAT to PDF
TrID FREE
Run TrID against the .dat file to match its bytes against known format signatures; once the real format is identified, open it in the appropriate program and use Print or Export to produce a PDF.
`file` command FREE
On macOS or Linux, run file yourfile.dat in a terminal to check whether the content matches a known format; then open it in the matching program and use that program's print or export function.
About these formats

- Online DAT-to-PDF sites either reject the file outright or produce a PDF of raw bytes - neither is useful; avoid uploading unknown .dat files if they may contain personal data.
- If the .dat turns out to be readable text, copy the content into a word processor and export to PDF from there.
- macOS has a built-in Print to PDF option in every print dialog; Windows 10 and later include Microsoft Print to PDF - use these from whichever app can open the .dat.
