.sfx is a self-extracting archive format. .sfx files store compressed data together with the extraction code needed to unpack it, so the archive decompresses itself without any additional software on the target machine. On Windows, the finished self-extractor is a standard PE executable - its first two bytes are MZ, the normal Windows executable header - with the compressed payload appended after the extractor stub. The stub locates the archive data via the embedded archive's own trailing signature.
It is worth noting that no additional files can be added to such an archive once it has been created. The compression algorithm depends on the archiver used to build it: common choices include DEFLATE (.ZIP), RAR (.RAR), or LZMA/LZMA2 (.7Z).
Most archiving and compression tools offer the option to create self-extracting archives. The most popular finished form is an .EXE file; a bare .sfx file typically denotes the WinRAR SFX *module* (the stub used to assemble a self-extractor), rather than the finished archive itself. When a .sfx file cannot be extracted by double-clicking, renaming it to .exe and running it - or opening it directly in 7-Zip or WinRAR without executing it - usually resolves the problem.
.sfx files are typically blocked by mail servers when attached to email messages due to their executable nature. For the same reason, treat any .sfx or self-extracting .exe from an untrusted source exactly as you would any unknown executable. Real archivers such as 7-Zip and WinRAR can open the embedded archive payload without running the file, which is the safest approach with unfamiliar sources.

РИСК: HIGHAn SFX is executable code, which makes it a classic malware delivery method: attackers disguise droppers as harmless self-extracting archives, and some abuse WinRAR SFX scripts to silently run commands after extraction (a known living-off-the-land technique). Rules: never double-click an SFX from an unknown sender; open it read-only in 7-Zip or WinRAR to inspect the payload first; scan with antivirus; and be wary of SFX 'comment'/setup scripts that auto-launch a program. A signed installer from a vendor's official site is fine; an unexpected .exe in an email is not.
