Why convert WLMP to MSWMM?
A .wlmp file is a plain-text XML project file created by Windows Live Movie Maker (2009-2017) that stores editing decisions as references to source clips on disk. A .mswmm file is the older binary project format from Windows Movie Maker used in the XP/Vista era, working the same way. The two formats are not interchangeable: Windows Live Movie Maker replaced .mswmm with .wlmp and offered no backward save option, and the older Movie Maker cannot open .wlmp files.

- Renaming .wlmp to .mswmm only changes the extension label; the file content is still Windows Live Movie Maker XML and the old Movie Maker cannot read it.
- Both Windows Movie Maker (XP/Vista) and Windows Live Movie Maker were discontinued by Microsoft and are no longer available for official download.
- On Windows 10/11, Microsoft's current video editors (Photos app and Clipchamp) cannot open .wlmp or .mswmm project files.
