Why convert VSD to VSDX?
VSDX is the current Visio standard - a ZIP/XML package that is smaller, open and supported by tools like draw.io that cannot open the old binary VSD. Converting to .vsdx also makes the file easier to version-control and allows import into third-party diagram editors that understand VSDX but have no legacy VSD support.
How to convert VSD to VSDX
Microsoft Visio APP
Open the .vsd in Visio 2013 or later, go to File > Save As, set the file type to Visio Drawing (.vsdx), and save. All drawing pages are included in the output automatically.

- The conversion is lossless within Visio - shapes, connectors, text, pages, masters and metadata all carry over.
- If the VSD contains VBA macros, Visio will prompt to save as VSDX (macros stripped) or VSDM (macros kept); choose VSDX unless the macros are needed.
- LibreOffice Draw can open VSD for viewing but cannot export to VSDX and is not a viable conversion path.
