Why convert STEP to GCODE?
A .step file (ISO 10303) contains precise boundary-representation geometry with no manufacturing information. G-code is a list of machine-specific movement instructions (tool positions, feeds, temperatures) that differ between every printer or CNC machine. Converting requires tessellation to a mesh and then slicer or CAM processing - neither step can be performed automatically without user input about the target machine.
How to convert STEP to GCODE
FreeCAD (export to STL, then slice) FREE
Open the .step in FreeCAD and export the model as .stl via File > Export. Then open the .stl in a slicer such as Cura or PrusaSlicer, configure settings for your printer, and generate G-code.
Fusion 360 CAM workspace APP
Import the .step into Fusion 360 and switch to the CAM workspace to define tool paths and machine settings for CNC milling. This requires configuring tools, operations, and feeds - it is not a one-click conversion.
About these formats
A STEP file is a 3D CAD model stored in the ISO 10303 neutral format so engineers can share geometry between different CAD programs. To view one for free, use FreeCAD, CAD Assistant, or…

- G-code is machine-specific - G-code generated for one printer or CNC machine cannot be used on a different machine without modification.
- The conversion from
.stepto G-code always requires tessellation to a mesh format (.stlor.3mf) as a mandatory intermediate step. - Slicer default settings may not suit your printer; always verify layer height, temperature, and support structures before sending G-code to a machine.
